How long does it take to learn German?

Due to belonging to the same West Germanic group of the Indo-European language family as English, German is one of the easiest languages to learn by fluent English speakers. According to the FSI (Foreign Service Institute) of the US government, an English speaker would need about 750 class hours or 30 weeks of practice to become fluent in German.

Contrary to German’s reputation of being one of the hardest languages to learn, this grading scale used by the US government rates it as easier to learn than languages such as Indonesian, Polish, Turkish, Icelandic, Finnish or Greek. Thus German is not as hard to learn as many may think.

However, the data from the FSI is not 100% valid for every individual. Your progress can be influenced by a lot of different factors like:
